PRESIDENTIAL TERM
After his military career he was elected vice president in 1900 and worked with
president William McKinley who was killed later in 1901 by Leon F. Czolgosz while
visiting at the World Fair in Buffalo. Meanwhile, Theodore was in Vermont giving a
speech when he got the news that McKinley had been shot and that he had to hurry back
to Buffalo. After a unexpected turn in McKinley’s health of which he died from,
Theodore took his place as president on September 14, 1901 at the age of 42. During
Theodore’s 8 year term of office he tried to make life better for all the people living in the
U.S by trying to limit the power of huge businesses. Also with the approval of congress
they passed laws to control the railroads, to protect people from harmful foods and drugs, and to save the nations forests. He was the first
American to win the Noble prize.
